Christmas always makes me long for my long lost childhood. The innocence of the ‘wow’ factor Christmas morning, seeing what Santa has left under the tree. TV has had an impact on those great memories.
Christmas specials from Thanksgiving to Christmas day, help to build the anticipation that something big is coming closer, one TV show at a time.
Charlie Brown was a staple at our house throughout the year. From Charlie’s heart being broken at Valentines, to Easter egg hunting with the Easter Beagle. Nothing, however, could top the annual Thanksgiving gathering of the Peanuts gang to toast and jellybeans.
I knew once I got past Thanksgiving and the TV specials, including the Macy’s Parade, Santa would not be far from visiting! Heck, there he was at the end of the parade, ready to deliver that wonderful bag of goodies to my house!
December was a ritual of looking through the TV guide to plan out what shows were on TV and when. Cartoons, Rankin-Bass animated shows filled the air throughout the whole month!Â
I can remember watching a Christmas cartoon while I had the Sears Wishbook catalog out, marking out the pages of stuff I wanted so Santa would have an easy time finding it for me.
Back in those days, there only 3 channels - ABC, CBS and NBC (and sometimes PBS). There was no cable or satellite to watch so every ounce of Christmas that was on TV was that much more special.
Of course the saddest part of Christmas on TV was when it was gone from the airwaves for yet another year. I was a kid then so by the time Christmas TV was over and Spring had come to visit, we were outside playing, waiting until the next fall when the TV would repeat this honored tradition all over again.
Today, I think back on those times as good ones. Watching those programs on TV now, just makes me smile as I think about those Christmases. I guess that’s something I’ll always have with me - Christmas and TV being related. Welcome home!
