Fall will arrive later this month, but Sister Hazel is already getting ready for Christmas.
The rock band, who will perform at the Lake Martin Amphitheater on Sunday, is preparing for the release of its first holiday album, “Santa’s Playlist.†It hits stores on Sept. 25.
Drummer Mark Trojanowski said the project is one the band has wanted to do for a long time. But he said in order to get a holiday album out in time for the season, it has to be finished by June, and the band’s touring and recording schedule hasn’t made it easy for them to do so.
Things changed this year, however, thanks to the release of the album “BAM! Volume 1,†a collection of B-sides and other odds and ends. It gave Sister Hazel a little bit of time for the Christmas album, but it still required the band to do things a little different.
Instead of a conventional studio, they laid down a lot of the tracks in home recording studios. They all have advanced recording “rigs†in their homes, so each member of the group took a few songs and recorded them (instead of working with an outside producer).
They also wrote and recorded a lot of the lyrics while on tour in cities such as Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta and Dallas. “Santa’s Playlist†features traditional and original holiday songs with Sister Hazel’s added touch.
“It was different, but we all really wanted it to happen and we’re pretty excited about it,†Trojanowski said.
The group is also enjoying the release of “BAM! Volume 1.â€
“Every record, we always record more songs than we use for the album,†Trojanowski said. “There will just be songs sitting around and some we’ll play on tour. People will like them and wonder what happened to them and how can they hear them again.â€
Sister Hazel will play songs from both albums at the Lake Martin concert. They’re looking forward to hearing what their devoted fans, nicknamed “Hazelnuts,†think.
“We’re excited to be coming back (to Lake Martin),†Trojanowski said. “We did the Labor Day show there last year and it’s always been a really strong area for us.â€
