The New York Times is reporting that a musical version of the movie “Elf” is headed to Broadway:
A musical adaptation of the 2003 film “Elf,†which starred Will Ferrell as a human raised among Santa’s little helpers, will help kick off the holiday season on Broadway in November with a limited run at the Al Hirschfeld Theater through Christmas and New Year’s Day, according to three people with knowledge of the plans. Thomas Meehan (“Annie,†“The Producersâ€), who is writing the show’s book with Bob Martin (“The Drowsy Chaperoneâ€), said in a telephone interview that “Elf the Musical†was in “very good shape, very fun shape†and was set to arrive at the Hirschfeld some time in November. The music is by Matthew Sklar and the lyrics by Chad Beguelin, who collaborated on the musical adaptation of the movie “The Wedding Singer.†Two theater executives, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss the show ahead of its official announcement, said that the director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw (“Drowsy Chaperone,†“All About Meâ€) would direct “Elf†and that the run was expected at this point to be limited, similar to recent holiday-timed shows on Broadway like “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas†and “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!â€
